Regular physical activity significantly improves health outcomes, yet rates of childhood physical inactivity remain alarmingly high.
The PLEY project seeks to develop the physical literacy of preschool children by supporting the teachers of Early Years PE in their understanding of pedagogical practices in PE. Aimed largely at children aged 2-7, the Physical Literacy for Early Years project focuses on providing the movement skills and motivation to be active for life.
Based on UNESCO’s International Charter of Physical Education, Physical Activity and Sport, on the Council of Europe’s Recommendation on the European Sports Charter and the WHO’s Global Action Plan on Physical Activity 2018 – 2030, the PLEY project strives for early positive experiences of play, games and physical activities for children as to lay a foundation of the knowledge, skills, attitudes and motivation necessary for the maintenance of lifelong participation in physical activity and sport.
Project results to be produced over an eighteen-month period such as 30 video resources with pedagogical approaches and lesson plan units, 10 posters as methodological preparation for preschool classes, 1 Physical Literacy handbook for educators and parents, 3 public awareness campaigns, 1 international and 3 national workshops will be entirely focused on achieving the project’s specific goals.
